Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His death was announced early Wednesday on Instagram by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” the family statement read.
The family also requested privacy during the mourning period.
A Six-Decade Career
Born on July 11, 1942 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.” He began his career in British theatre and television in the 1970s, appearing in series such as _The Goodies_, _The Professionals_, and _The Tomorrow People_, as well as international films including _The Dogs of War_ and _Pirates_. dca2e91d60c2
After returning to Nigeria, he became one of the founding figures of Nollywood and starred in more than 100 films. Known for his deep, commanding voice and authoritative screen presence, he earned several honours including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in 2007, an Industry Merit Award at AMVCA in 2013, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at AFRIFF in 2021. In 2011 he was conferred the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Alongside his wife, fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs was also involved in arts development through the Lufodo Group.
Legacy
Jacobs is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s elder statesmen. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian cinema, where he helped shape both stage and screen acting standards over five decades.
He is survived by his wife Joke Silva and their two children.
