Police at the busy Mange Checkpoint have arrested a suspected armed robber found in possession of a semi-automatic rifle and dozens of live rounds, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has confirmed.
The suspect has been identified as Dibro Kamara, of Kissy Town, Waterloo in the Western Area Rural District.
According to the SLP Media Team, Kamara was intercepted on Monday, 19 October 2026, during a routine stop-and-search operation at the Mange Police Checkpoint, a major security post linking Freetown to the North-West region.
During the search, officers discovered:
– One semi-automatic rifle
– 48 rounds of live ammunition
He was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
Mange, located along the Freetown-Kambia highway in Port Loko District, is one of the most strategic checkpoints in the country and has been responsible for several major interceptions of illicit drugs, arms and suspected criminals in recent months.
Police say the suspect is currently helping with investigations and will be transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Freetown for further questioning.
The SLP has not yet disclosed where the weapon was being taken to or whether the suspect is linked to recent armed robberies reported in Waterloo and the Freetown Peninsula.
The arrest comes at a time when the Force has intensified checkpoint operations nationwide ahead of the festive season.
