The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has tested a newly equipped tear-gas drone at several locations across Freetown to assess its functionality, operational readiness and potential use in crowd management.
The exercise, conducted on 22 October 2026, involved Head of the Information and Communications Technology Department, ASP David A. Mbayo, and members of the Police Drone Team at Police Headquarters.
According to the SLP, the test forms part of efforts to modernise policing and strengthen law enforcement capabilities through emerging technologies.
ASP Mbayo emphasised that any deployment of the equipment must comply with the law and established operational procedures, with public safety, protection of life and respect for human rights remaining paramount.
The police also highlighted the need for comprehensive training, strict operational safeguards and effective supervision to minimise risks and prevent indiscriminate exposure to tear gas, particularly among vulnerable groups.
The SLP reaffirmed its commitment to the responsible use of technology in maintaining public order while protecting the rights, safety and well-being of citizens.
