President Julius Maada Bio has welcomed former President Ernest Bai Koroma back to Sierra Leone, saying his return is a chance for the country to come together in peace and work for a better future.
Koroma arrived in Freetown on Sunday, 6 September, after spending more than two years in Nigeria. The government dropped the treason charges against him in July. Those charges came after the failed 2023 attack on military and prison facilities in Freetown.
President Bio met him at State House and shared a message calling on Sierra Leoneans to stay united and focused on moving the country forward.
“Today at the State House, I welcomed former President Ernest Bai Koroma back to Freetown and Sierra Leone. Let us unite in purpose, reinforce our peace, and commit to building a stronger, more prosperous, and hopeful Sierra Leone,” Bio said.
Koroma, who led the country from 2007 to 2018, was welcomed at the airport by government officials, members of his APC party and other leaders. He told journalists he was happy to be home.
Nigeria helped arrange his return, with officials including former presidents and the foreign minister accompanying him. The move comes as many people continue to call for calm politics and national unity so Sierra Leone can keep developing.
