The All People’s Congress (APC) Strategic Communications Unit has hit back hard at claims that former President Ernest Bai Koroma is the one stirring trouble and pushing court cases inside the main opposition party.
In a statement called “Former President Ernest Bai Koroma, a Pacesetter Who Led the APC with Distinct Leadership,” the unit said the accusations are unfair and wrong.
They rejected any idea that Koroma is working to break the party from inside. Instead, they described him as a true statesman who made big sacrifices for the APC and for Sierra Leone.
The unit said people should not try to blame Koroma for the recent court cases and resignations. That is just looking for scapegoats instead of facing the real problems the party has right now. They reminded everyone that Koroma led the APC for ten years as party leader and as President from 2007 to 2018. During that time the party grew stronger, roads and other infrastructure improved, healthcare got better, institutions were built up, and the country stayed peaceful.
They made it clear that Koroma is still a loyal APC member who wants unity, progress, and for the party to return to power.
The statement ended with a strong line: “He built the APC. He will not break the APC.” The unit also called on all members to stay united, follow party rules, and respect the constitution while the APC works through its current difficulties.
Koroma has always been a central figure in the APC. In recent years the party has gone through many internal fights over who should lead, whether the constitution is being followed, and how delegates’ conferences should be run. Court cases from reform groups and individual members have led to injunctions stopping executives from acting, questions about national bodies, and arguments over temporary arrangements until a proper national conference can be held. As recently as late August 2026, the High Court issued an interim injunction restraining senior executives from performing certain functions amid these ongoing disputes.
Separately, Koroma faced serious treason and related charges tied to the November 2023 attempted coup in Freetown. He always denied any involvement. After time under house arrest and then medical treatment in Nigeria arranged with help from ECOWAS, the Sierra Leone government dropped all the charges in July 2026 on health grounds. Koroma thanked President Julius Maada Bio, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, and ECOWAS. He stressed the need for peace, justice, and reconciliation. He is now free to return home whenever he chooses.
