Final-year nursing and midwifery students at the University of Sierra Leone can no longer hold signing-out celebrations on campus.
The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, part of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS), has on Tuesday put out a clear notice, stating that, “No signing-out activities will be allowed on university grounds.”
Students have been told to take the rule seriously and work with the administration.
The move is meant to keep things in line with university rules and maintain order on campus. The faculty is asking all final-year students to respect the decision and not organise any of these events inside the university.
In Sierra Leone, signing-out has become a big tradition for many final-year students. After finishing their last exams, they often mark the moment with parties, dancing, processions, and gifts from family and friends, sometimes even receiving cars, cash, or land. Some people have pointed out that these celebrations can feel early since results and official graduation confirmation are not yet out. Students have sometimes celebrated only to later find out they still have modules to clear.
The notice does not spell out further details on alternatives or wider university policy beyond the campus ban for this faculty. It simply states the rule and calls for cooperation.
Students are expected to follow the directive as they wrap up their programmes.
