According to Abdul Kargbo, the APC Minority Leader in Parliament, there are serious concerns that the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) is attempting to amend or reinterpret the Constitution without transparency or inclusive national consultation. He argues that constitutional reform, by its very nature, must be participatory and cannot be undertaken unilaterally by a ruling party without the involvement of opposition parties, civil society, and the wider public.
In response, Attorney General Alpha Sesay has reportedly downplayed the proposed amendments, describing them as minor adjustments that have evolved across successive administrations, from the Kabbah era to the Koroma period.
However, Hon. Kargbo strongly rejects this position, stressing that even minor constitutional changes require broad consensus. He warns that proceeding without inclusivity risks undermining democratic legitimacy and could serve partisan interests rather than the collective will of the people of Sierra Leone.
