According to a report from Satellite Newspaper, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has formally summoned the Deputy Minister of Sports, Lawrence Kai Mbayo, to its headquarters in Freetown. This invitation is in connection with his recent public statements that have made serious false accusations against Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
Sources close to the investigation suggest that Mbayo has been called in to clarify his role in disseminating allegations that Vice President Jalloh offered support to a Lebanese businessman, Jiad Basma, in the alleged unlawful acquisition of a diamond. These claims have not only raised eyebrows but have also led to significant unrest in the political arena.
The controversy surrounding Mbayo’s remarks intensified when he continued to speak publicly despite it being an ongoing legal case already brought before the courts. His accusations included a claim that the diamond reportedly sold to Basma was rightfully his and implied that the Vice President had an unethical role in enabling this purported illegal transaction.
However, law enforcement officials have contradicted these claims, revealing that the diamond in question is owned by a foreign businessman engaged in mining operations in Kono District. This statement undermines Mbayo’s assertions and places additional scrutiny on his motives and credibility concerning the matter. The CID’s formal invitation of Mbayo indicates a serious commitment to investigating the implications of his statements and the potential repercussions they may have on public trust and governance in Sierra Leone.
