SLPP Publicity Secretary Moses Mambu has said that former President Ernest Bai Koroma’s return home might worry some ordinary SLPP supporters because of what happened on 26 November 2023.
Speaking to SKB, Mambu explained that the party is talking directly to its grassroots members to clear the air.
He said some supporters still feel the pain and fear from that day, when armed men attacked military places, security posts and prisons. The government called it an attempted coup against the SLPP government.
Mambu said the party is making sure its people understand why Koroma was allowed to come back and what led to it.
Koroma returned to Sierra Leone on 6 September 2026 after more than two years in Nigeria. The government had dropped the treason and other charges that were brought against him over the 2023 events. ECOWAS welcomed the move, and President Julius Maada Bio later met the former president as part of efforts toward national unity and peace.
Still, Mambu said the SLPP is careful about how some of its supporters might feel, especially those who lived through the tension and trauma of that period. The party’s main work right now is to explain the situation clearly to its members so no one is left confused or worried.
Koroma’s return has sparked a lot of talk across the country, especially with the 2028 elections not far away. People are discussing what it means for peace and politics in Sierra Leone.
