Former Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden OOR, has sworn and filed a ten-page affidavit at the Law Courts in Freetown, marking the first formal legal step in her quest for redress against Liberty TV Online and media personality Zainab Sheriff.
The affidavit, which has been submitted to the Complaints Committee of the Independent Media Commission (IMC), outlines what Dr. Blyden describes as serious professional and ethical misconduct by both the media outlet and Ms. Sheriff. According to the filing, the dispute stems from events dating back to April 2023.
In the affidavit, Dr. Blyden identifies Abubakarr Jah, whom she describes as Ms. Sheriff’s nephew, as the individual who allegedly approached her at the time. She claims Jah requested that she publicly inform Sierra Leoneans that Zainab Sheriff was not under arrest but was instead “resting at her house,” following widespread public speculation.
Dr. Blyden states that she chose to remain silent for an extended period, despite what she characterises as false accusations and misrepresentations made against her in the public domain. She now maintains that the affidavit provides documentary evidence and a detailed account intended to set the record straight.
As of the time of filing, neither Liberty TV Online nor Zainab Sheriff had issued a public response to the allegations.
