The Fisheries Department remains one of the most critical sectors requiring sustained government attention, particularly in supporting artisanal fishermen whose activities significantly contribute to Sierra Leone’s economy.
During a visit to King Jimmy Community in Freetown, artisanal fishermen openly expressed deep concerns over the challenges confronting their livelihoods. Community fishermen lamented what they described as persistent neglect by government authorities, citing a lack of institutional support, inadequate fishing equipment, poor access to modern storage facilities, and limited engagement from fisheries officials.
According to the fishermen, these constraints continue to weaken productivity, reduce income, and expose them to unsafe fishing practices. Many noted that despite artisanal fishing being a major source of employment and food security, the sector remains largely underserved in policy implementation and resource allocation.
Artisanal fishing plays a vital role in national revenue generation, local employment, and household nutrition, making it an area that demands urgent and strategic government intervention. Stakeholders in King Jimmy stressed that with proper support; such as training, financing, improved monitoring, and infrastructure the sector could significantly boost economic growth.
The fishermen therefore called on the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, to pay keen attention to coastal communities like King Jimmy, strengthen engagement with artisanal fishermen, and implement practical solutions that will enhance productivity and sustainability within the fishing industry.
As Sierra Leone continues to pursue economic diversification, addressing the concerns of artisanal fishing communities remains essential to unlocking the full potential of the fisheries sector.
