The Government of Sierra Leone has strongly condemned repeated attacks carried out by the Houthi militia against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including strikes targeting civilian areas and critical energy infrastructure.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on Friday, the government said it stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Saudi Arabia and extended sympathy to all those affected by the attacks.
According to the ministry, the targeting of oil and energy facilities, civilian infrastructure, airports and other critical installations constitutes a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
The government warned that such actions risk disrupting international energy supplies, commercial activity and freedom of navigation along vital maritime routes linking the Red Sea, the Gulf region and the wider global economy.
The Government reaffirmed its firm commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
It stressed that civilian populations and civilian infrastructure must be protected and that all parties to armed conflicts are required to comply with international humanitarian law.
Sierra Leone called on the Houthis to immediately cease attacks against Saudi Arabia, refrain from further escalation and respect the principles of international law.
The government also urged all parties involved in the Yemen conflict and the wider regional crisis to exercise maximum restraint and pursue dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
As a nation committed to multilateralism and international peace and security, Sierra Leone said it supports the efforts of the United Nations and its Special Envoy for Yemen toward achieving a comprehensive, inclusive, Yemen-led and Yemen-owned political settlement.
The statement further highlighted the importance of safeguarding the security of international commercial shipping and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, noting that continued escalation in the strategic waterways poses risks not only to regional peace but also to international trade, maritime security and the economies of developing countries.
The Government said it stands ready, within the framework of the United Nations and other appropriate multilateral mechanisms, to support efforts aimed at de-escalation, dialogue, regional stability and a durable political settlement in Yemen.
