The government has announced new pump prices for petrol and diesel that take effect from today, 8 September 2026.
According to the notice, Petrol will sell at NLe40.00 per litre, and
Diesel will sell at NLe45.00 per litre.
These replace the previous official rates of NLe35 for petrol and NLe40 for diesel that had been in place since mid-August.
The government noted that world oil prices have continued to rise, driven in part by the ongoing conflict involving Iran and its effect on international markets. Oil prices hit multi-week highs this week as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz increased supply worries.
Without government support, the full pass-through prices would have been NLe41.04 for petrol and NLe46.76 for diesel. The government says it is absorbing the difference through subsidies to cushion the impact on consumers.
In recent days several oil marketing companies reduced or stopped sales at filling stations, causing shortages and queues. The new prices are intended to restore normal supply across the country.
According to the government, waka Fine public transport fares will not increase as a result of the new pump prices, noting that they will cover the extra fuel cost to protect commuters from an immediate rise in bus fares.
Officials also say they are speeding up steps to strengthen the country’s role in importing, storing and wholesaling petroleum products. The goal is better fuel security, more stable markets, and less vulnerability to external price shocks.
This is according to a public notice issued today by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
