Young journalist Glorious Aminata Bangura, popularly known as the “GenZ Reporter,” was laid to rest in Freetown on Monday.
Family members, classmates, friends and fellow content creators gathered to say their final goodbye to the 21-year-old Broadcast Journalism student. Many remembered her passion for reporting and creating content, and how her lively personality was beginning to make her stand out in the media.
But the funeral service took an unexpected turn. Pastor Amos, who preached at the service, suggested that Aminata might still be alive today if she had followed the spiritual and moral training she received at home.
He told the mourners that if she had chosen to stick to the ethics and teachings her family gave her, she would not have died so young and would have had the chance to fulfil her purpose in life.
“Peradventure they gave her the training, if she had chosen to subscribe to the home training, the ethics being given to her, I don’t think she would have been dead by now; she would have fulfilled purpose,” the pastor said.
He also quoted Joshua 1:8, urging people to keep God’s word close and live by it carefully.
Some of the mourners and church members were not happy with the pastor’s words. The disagreement grew and later turned into a physical confrontation.
Despite the tension, people still paid their last respects as Aminata was buried.
