Burkina Faso Authorities Say Assassination Plot Against Captain Traoré Foiled.
By Reporter J
Burkina Faso’s military-led government has announced that it has thwarted what it describes as a sophisticated plot to assassinate the country’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, following an intelligence-led security operation carried out at what officials say was the final stage of execution.
Speaking to state media, Security Minister Mahamadou Sana said the alleged plot went beyond an attempt on the life of the head of state. According to him, the plan also targeted key state institutions as well as civilian figures, suggesting a wider agenda aimed at destabilising the country’s political and security framework.
Minister Sana claimed that security forces were able to intercept the operation before it could be carried out, preventing what he described as potentially severe consequences for national stability. He did not, however, disclose specific operational details, citing security concerns.
The government has accused former military ruler Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Damiba, who was removed from power in September 2022, of masterminding the alleged plot. Authorities further alleged that the operation was financed from neighbouring Ivory Coast, a claim that could heighten regional tensions.
As of the time of the announcement, neither Lt Col Damiba nor the Ivorian government had publicly responded to the accusations.
Burkina Faso has experienced repeated coups and ongoing insecurity linked to armed insurgency, making political stability and internal security critical concerns for the current administration.
