A sports meet at Abbako Technical College in Port Loko turned tragic on Friday, 9 January 2026, when Year Two HTC student Abdul Sesay of Red Hall collapsed shortly after completing a relay race and was later pronounced dead at Port Loko Government Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred during the 4×800 metres medley relay. After successfully passing the baton, Sesay suddenly fell. On-site medical personnel and sports officials immediately administered first aid and rushed him by okada to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
The sudden collapse brought the athletic meet to a halt, replacing the day’s cheers and music with shock and grief. Fellow students described Sesay as healthy, committed, and an enthusiastic athlete who volunteered to represent his hall and inspired his peers.
Port Loko Police have opened an inquiry, and a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death. The Abbako Technical College community and local residents continue to mourn the loss of a promising student.
