The brief but solemn ceremony took place on Wednesday morning, during which the Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, Madam Hawa Samai, pinned a white ribbon on the President. The gesture formally launched National Remembrance Week and signified a collective commitment to peace, reflection, and national unity. The white ribbon serves as a symbol honoring all those who lost their lives in service to the nation.
National Remembrance Day will be observed on January 18, with commemorative activities continuing through January 21. Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, the Chief Minister, and Cabinet Ministers also received white ribbons, underscoring the leadership’s shared dedication to remembrance, healing, and reconciliation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Mr. Chernor Bah, emphasized the importance of unity and collective memory in national development. He encouraged citizens to wear the white ribbon and actively engage in reflection activities throughout the week.
Across the country, the symbol has been widely embraced by schoolchildren, security personnel, drivers, and the general public. Several memorial events have been scheduled nationwide, including a special program honoring journalists who lost their lives during the civil war, organized in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists.
The week-long observance reinforces the government’s commitment to peace, national healing, and a shared future.
