The United States has suspended all assistance to the Somali government following allegations that senior officials destroyed a United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse and illegally seized donor-funded food aid intended for vulnerable communities.
In a statement released on X, the US State Department said reports indicate that at least 76 tonnes of life-saving food assistance were unlawfully taken by Somali officials. The food, funded by international donors, was meant to support displaced persons and communities facing severe food insecurity in the Horn of Africa.
The Trump administration described the alleged actions as a serious violation of humanitarian principles and warned that misuse of aid undermines global efforts to support populations in crisis. Washington reiterated its “zero-tolerance policy” for waste, theft, or diversion of humanitarian assistance, stressing that aid must reach those for whom it is intended.
US officials said the suspension will remain in place until the Somali government accepts full responsibility for the incident and takes concrete corrective measures, including accountability for those involved and safeguards to prevent future abuse.
The decision is expected to worsen pressure on Somalia, where millions rely on humanitarian assistance due to prolonged conflict, drought, and economic instability. International partners have urged Somali authorities to cooperate fully with investigations to restore donor confidence and ensure continued support for vulnerable citizens.
